Americans Are Willing to Pay More for Clean Energy |
|
|

|

Opponents of renewable energy often attack solar and wind power for being more expensive, believing that coal and natural gas are simply too cheap not to burn. But a new study shows that not only do most Americans support clean energy, they’re willing to pay $162 more each year in electricity bills if it means more of the country’s power comes from wind and solar power plants.
The germ of this study came from President Obama’s State of the Union speech in 2011, when he called for Congress to pass a clean energy standardthat would require 80 percent of the country’s power to come from clean energy sources by 2035. The idea caught the attention of Matthew Kotchen, one of the study’s three authors. At the time he wondered, “What does clean energy actually mean, and is there support for it?”

Marin Energy rolls out to all of Marin |

SAN RAFAEL—Two years ago the Marin Energy Authority “flipped the switch” and began serving about 7,000 Marin customers, putting an unprecedented percentage of “green electrons” on the California grid on behalf of our customers. Since that historic day, MEA has procured an ever-increasing amount of renewable electricity through its Marin Clean Energy program, gradually enrolling more customers.
Marin Clean Energy is now available to all Marin residents and businesses who have three choices, at competitive rates:
- PG&E, with 20% renewables in their supply portfolio
- Marin Clean Energy Light Green, with 50% renewables
- Marin Clean Energy Deep Green, with 100% renewables
Choice and rate stability matter to most – but the critical driving force behind MCE’s formation was climate change brought on by greenhouse gas emissions. There was growing concern in Marin among residents, scientists, and policy- makers that global warming must be addressed aggressively. Reducing our dependence on foreign and domestic oil and simultaneously reducing greenhouse gas emissions is a local imperative.
